Historique :	Un an avant sa mort, Prud'hon peint en 1822 une Crucifixion, pour la cathédrale de Metz. Dès 1823, le tableau est cédé au Louvre en échange d'une copie dudit tableau, plus deux autres peintures. La copie est de mêmes dimensions que l'original. En 1891, l'Etat commande à Mme de Bouet une copie de ce tableau, le destinataire de la copie étant l'église Notre-Dame de Villedieu. Et le tableau est effectivement livré à Villedieu en 1892.
